Ethiopian Forestry Development
Message from the Director General
Ethiopia’s forestry sector is undergoing a decisive reform, driven by rapid population growth, rising energy needs, fragile ecosystems, and intensifying climate change impacts. These converging pressures are compelling a fundamental shift in how our forest resources are managed, conserved, and economically utilized. In response, the sector is accelerating the adoption of sustainable forest management practices, technological innovation, and aggressive landscape restoration to combat land degradation, secure vital watersheds, and drive the national green economy.Forestry in Ethiopia offers expanding opportunities for local communities, eco-tourism developers, sustainable timber and non-timber forest product enterprises, and green investors across the value chain. The Ethiopian Forestry Development is fully committed to working in partnership with all stakeholders to drive this ecological and economic transformation at speed and at scale. To this end, the EFD will focus on three strategic domains:
First, creating an enabling environment: Developing robust policy frameworks and market-based incentives that crowd in private investment, promote sustainable commercial forestry, and stimulate community-based forest management.
Second, strengthening data and knowledge systems: Enhancing the generation and use of forest inventory data, geospatial evidence, climate research, and local skills to empower foresters, researchers, and policymakers to make informed, timely decisions.
Third, investing in resilient landscapes and infrastructure: Scaling up participatory forest management, restoring degraded lands through initiatives like the Green Legacy, and safeguarding biodiversity to unlock the full potential of Ethiopia’s natural resources in a sustainable and inclusive manner.Through these concerted efforts, Ethiopia will advance towards a modern, resilient, and thriving forestry sector that delivers prosperity for its people, secures our environmental future, and contributes meaningfully to national development.
