MEKELLE FORESTRY DEVELOPMENT CENTER(MFDC)
Mekelle Forestry Development Centre (MFDC) was established on July 8, 2015 and is one of the seven centers administered under the then Ethiopian Environment and Forest Research Institute (EEFRI) and transferred to operate under the newly established Ethiopian Forestry Development (EFD) since 14th April,2022. Its office is
located 780 km North of the capital, Addis Ababa, at 13°29′ N 39°28′ E, with an elevation of 2084masl at Mekelle. The mean annual rainfall in its mandate areas range from 350 to 1200 mm and minimum temperature and maximum temperatures are 12 °C and 34 °C, respectively. According to the recently established organizational structure, the Center is designed to have three sub-centers in its mandated areas of Humara, Shire, and Mekhoni.
Research and development issues of forests, trees, and climate change in Tigray region are the thematic mandates of the center. Since its establishment the center was able to produce various forest and climate change related research findings by which are published in peer reviewed journals and presented in numerous research workshops. Currently, the Centre has research sites in Southern zone: Raya Azebo, Raya Alamata, Endamekhoni, Alaje, and Ofla woredas, South Eastern zone: Wejerat and Hintalo Weredas, Eastern zone: Hawuzien Wereda, Central zone: Kola tembien,Tanquamilash and Abergele Weredas of Tigray region for natural forest, plantation and agroforestry research.
The following are the main thematic mandates of the center;
- Plantation Research; Production forestry, Urban forestry, Rehabilitation of degraded lands, Agroforestry, Tree seed, Forest insect pest and disease control
- Policy and socio-economics research; Forest policy and investment, Community based forestry, Forest products marketing, Forest related technology evaluation and knowledge evaluation
- Natural Forest and climate change research; Natural Forest (ecosystem, Vegetation dynamics, landscape change, etc.), Forests and climate change, Forest fire and invasive species management
- Forest development protection and utilization
