EFD establishment and History

The Federal Government of Ethiopia, councils of Ministers has reorganized the Ethiopian Forestry Development (EFD) by merging the then Ethiopian Environment and Forest Research Institute (EEFRI) and the Forestry sector from Environment, Forest and climate change Commission (EFCCC) in 2022 by regulation No. 505/2022, (Negarit Gazette No. 27, April, 2022).

Organized forestry research in Ethiopia was started by the establishment of Forestry Research Centre (FRC) and the then Wood Utilization Research Centre (WUARC) in 1975 and 1979, respectively, under the Forestry and Wildlife Conservation Development Authority (FaWCDA). The centres were incorporated into the then Ministry of Natural Resources Development and Environmental Protection in 1992 and again transferred to the Ministry of Agriculture in 1995.

Establishment and History of EEFRI

The Federal Government of Ethiopia reorganized the National Agricultural Research System and established the then Ethiopian Agricultural Research Organization (EARO) in 1997 by proclamation (Negarit Gazeta, 1997). As a result, FRC and WUARC were transferred to EARO as one research centre (FRC), and one of the research sectors of EARO, which is now renamed as the Ethiopian Institute of Agricultural Research (EIAR).

Then, the Government of Ethiopia found it necessary to give due attention to activities of environmental protection, forest development, protection and utilization activities by linking forestry research with environmental protection research at an institutional level for the attainment of the objectives of the government which led to the establish-ment of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MEFCC).

The Ministry of Environment and Forest was established by the amended proclamation 803/2013. The proclamation mandated the Ministry, to Coordinate and ensure the environmental, Forestry and climate change objectives. Finally Ethiopian Environment and Forest Research Institute (EEFRI) was established on December 26, 2014 by Regulation No. 327/2014 to support MEFCC with integrated research based information and technologies to promote the mission and objectives of MEFCC.

EEFRI has gone parallel to MEFCC and the next commission (EFCC) by supporting up to April, 2022 for about eight years and has established five new research centres at Hawassa, Bahir dar, DireDawa, Jimma and Mekele in addition to the former FRC and FPURC and conduct Environment, Forest and Climate science based researches for the last eight years.
